The
"Congresso Brasileiro de Polímeros" (Brazilian Polymer
Congress) is a biennial event that takes place at different
locations in Brazil, near centers where groups active in polymer
research exist. When it started, in 1991, the number of participants
was small and most of them came from the universities and
industries of the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
With time, the Brazilian community working on polymer research
has expanded and other groups appeared, even in the most distant
regions and states, from Rio Grande do Sul in the extreme
south to Cear in the north. This not only increased the number
of participants but also the quality of the research presented
at the meetings. Nowadays this congress represents the most
important meeting on polymer science in South America, involving
participants from this continent as well as from other laboratories
throughout the world. The support provided by IUPAC to the
meeting held at Gramado, in November 2001, is an indication
of the quality and acceptance of the meeting within the international
community. This support includes the publication of a special
issue of Macromolecular Symposia containing review
articles written by the researchers who gave the plenary lectures.
